Winter Olympics, eyes on the Vicenza Ghiotto, Zenere, Ambrosini and Segafredo

Sixteen athletes from Veneto have been called up by the Italian Winter Sports Federation for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics, which begin in a week. Four are from Vicenza, while overall the Italian team will be made up of 196 athletes (103 men and 93 women), engaged in five ice sports and eleven winter disciplines

The Vicenza native will be represented first and foremost, in speed skating, by the experience and solidity of Davide Ghiotto from Altavilla Vicentina (now lives in Zovencedo): 32 years old, a degree in philosophy, father of two children but above all bronze in Beijing 2022 in the 10 thousand meters, world champion in 2023 and 2024 over the same distance and silver both years in the 5 thousand. In the world cup stage a year ago in Calgary he set a new world record on the 10 thousand meters with a time of 12:25.69. The load of expectations on him is obviously very high.

The second athlete from Vicenza is, in figure skating, Filippo Ambrosini from Asiago (who will be paired with Rebecca Ghigliardi): 32 years old, his palmares counts an Italian title (2024), two European medals (silver 2023, bronze 2024), four medals in the Isu Grand Prix and participation in the Beijing 2022 Olympics (14th).

On the other hand, he is an athlete of a team sport (ice hockey) and the 21-year-old Alessandro Segafredo, one of the most promising young players of the Italian national team, is also from Asiago. Born in 2004, he was born and raised in Asiago, starting his career right in the ranks of his country's club. In 2016, at the age of 11, he moved to Switzerland where he now plays in the Zsc Lions Zurich as a striker. His father Stefano is a former player of both the starred and the Blue Team.

Finally, another athlete from the Plateau, the 29-year-old skier from Enego Asja Zenere, an athlete who has been able to carve out a space for herself at the highest levels in recent years, completes the Vicenza poker. His specialties are downhill, super-G and giant slalom.

The other athletes from Veneto are all from Belluno: Mattia Gaspari in skeleton; Elia Barp, Anna Comarella and Iris De Martin Pinter for cross-country skiing; for snowboarding there are Lucia Dalmasso and Elisa Caffont; in ski mountaineering Alba De Silvestro stands out. In curling Stefania Constantini, Giulia Zardini Lacedelli, Marta Lo Deserto and Rebecca Mariani; the Venetian team is completed by the hockey player Luca Zanatta from Cortina.

The races

The competitions will take place in Milan (ice skating and speed), Anterselva (biathlon), Cortina (bobsleigh, skeleton, luge and women's alpine skiing), Val di Fiemme (Nordic combined, cross-country skiing and ski jumping), Livigno (freestyle and snowboarding) and Bormio (men's alpine skiing and ski mountaineering).
